Hanna has shown a passion and dedication for supporting students and her support has saved me from burnout and from draining myself more than a few times these past few years. She is the biggest reason why my mental health has significantly improved, along with my self esteem and confidence.
Hanna works tirelessly to support student well-being by creating virtual and in-person communities for incoming and present students - during the summer (SOAR) and academic year (socials, webinars, Raftr). She has created a safe and welcoming community for all students to meet their peers and find resources. Hence, supporting students from before they step onto campus to when they graduate. Hanna promotes socials and resources that support students with what they need, when they need it. For example, Study'n'Snack provides students with resources to succeed and take care of themselves, with a calm space to study. Hanna collaborates with other departments (Yellow House, QUIC, and Residence) to promote resources that support students' well-being.
As a student, I believe her programs have helped students overcome nerves and homesickness. It's when our well-being is supported through her work that we are capable of thriving. Hanna has personally supported my well-being and success. When I started at Queen's, I was very insecure, self-conscious and believed that my worth was tied to my accomplishments. I genuinely believed that my life was not worth living if I wasn't extraordinary, and thus constantly pushed myself past my limits. That's when Hanna came along. She constantly and consistently reminded me of my inherent worth and value, she would tell me to be proud of what I've accomplished, and reminded me of my potential. Anytime I have little to no faith in myself, Hanna makes up for it by hyping me up, helping me to feel confident in myself and my abilities.
Hanna always makes herself available when I need support, whether it be related to work or not! Anytime I couldn't go to class, or had to leave the class halfway through - I came to her office. She opened herself as a listening ear, understanding me and providing me with advice when I needed it. She's always made me feel safe. Every time that I feel drained either mentally or physically, she always knew and wouldn't hesitate to help me in whatever way I needed. I never had to hide anything from her because from my first day she's showed me that she is there for me. That I am important and valued and nothing triumphs my health.
But more than everything else, Hanna made me feel secure and a part of a community. I came into Queen's feeling so alone, like a bother. She has changed my mindset to genuinely believe that I am not a burden nor alone.

Mental health is an integral part of overall health and wellbeing. It is an honour to be recognized as a Champion for Mental Health. As a member of the ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ community, I know I play an important role in supporting student mental health on campus.
I approach supporting student mental health with compassion and care. I work to create an environment that promotes positive mental health and provides a safe and inclusive space where students feel comfortable coming for support. I do this by taking the time to check-in with each student and create authentic relationships to help build trust. Once trust is built, I hope that students feel more comfortable sharing their challenges and being honest about their mental health. I want students to know that I am flexible and adaptable to each of their unique needs, ensuring they recognize their work comes second to their wellbeing. I genuinely care about how my students are doing, and hope they continue to feel seen, heard, understood, and supported in my office.
As educators and staff, it is important that we continue to enhance our understanding of student mental health by keeping up to date with training and knowledge of resources on campus. Perhaps most importantly, it is essential we care for our own mental health, not only to be positive role models, but also to be the best versions of ourselves to support our students. Remember to be kind and understanding to one another so that we can all continue to build a community of care and support at ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.
