Cheryl listens to problems and advises the best solution within her scope. The positivity and encouragement in her words have always been de-stressing. As an international student, I faced a couple of hardships that impaired my wellness and affected my progress. She always supported me through these issues by assuring me and taking immediate action. She'll explain every issue you have been facing and she will listen as a good friend without judging you.

When starting my graduate program at Queens, I had some bad experiences with my supervisor. I felt mentally unwell as I couldn't perform basic tasks like eating, sleeping, etc and was feeling intimidated to meet my supervisor. I sent an email to Cheryl, with all the details and asked about whether changing the supervisor is possible and if any alternative options existed. She referred to me to the Wellness Centre and to a place in SGSPA. She explained the process to me, which one student can follow if they want to change a supervisor. After using these resources, I became more hopeful that I had options available to me at Queen's. Cheryl followed up with me regarding my mental health, which was crucial for me during that period. She said that I did a great job by asking for help and that made me feel better. Now, I am working in a new lab with a different supervisor and I feel forever grateful to Cheryl for her kindness during my hardship.

Mental health is extremely important to me and my family. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. It [reduced mental health] is not something that can be fixed overnight. Mental health is not a destination but a journey, and everyone's journey is unique to them. It is okay to take a break and prioritize our mental health. It is important to not feel ashamed when discussing our mental health. I am proud to be a part of a community where students can come forward about their personal or academic challenges and be open about it without fear of judgement. I am also fortunate to work in a very inclusive and supportive work environment that allows me to feel valued and understood when faced with my own challenges.

The best way I can support student mental health is to be available for students to connect with online or in person, whenever they are feeling overwhelmed or alone. We like to ensure that all new Graduate students coming into ECE know that our doors are always open, whether the student just needs to talk, vent, or if they need any resources. Students are reassured that they are in a safe space when they come to talk to their Graduate Program Assistant and that their conversations are kept confidential. My goal is to ensure all students prioritize their well-being and feel comfort in knowing that they do not stand alone in their struggles with mental health. I try to always show empathy, and understand the studentā€™s point of view so that I can approach it with kindness and compassion. If I am unable to connect the student with useful resources at that moment, I will seek them out, as I will not rest until the student has access to all the information and services available to them.

"Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.ā€ Eleanor Brownn.
