More than a castle

Set in the heart of the English countryside, the Herstmonceux estate consists of 550 acres of rolling Sussex landscape, approximately 2 hours south of London, and half an hour east of Brighton.

PeacockAs well as a place of learning, the castle’s gardens and grounds attract visitors from around the UK and the world. Visitors can take in the changing seasons from spring to late summer where snowdrops are replaced by daffodils, then bluebells, before tulips and our summer roses. The grounds are also home to a staggering variety of flora and fauna with wild orchids, rare fungi and creatures such as lizards, woodpeckers, kingfishers, and deer.

Elizabethan GardensNearer the castle and gardens you will often stroll past ducks, a heron that patrols the moat, our resident peacock, and of course Canada geese. Various events take place throughout the year, including theatre productions, operatic performances, and antiques fairs. Students are welcome to buy tickets to these, and where possible tickets are provided at a discounted rate, if not free.
