David Emmons Torrance, age 69, passed away peacefully at home on Sun., Nov. 8, 2020, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Elizabeth Emmons Torrance and the late Daniel James Torrance, M.D. He earned his degrees from Washington and Lee University, Brown University, and his PhD from ����ֱ�� in Kingston, Ontario. Kingston held a special place in his heart, for this is where he learned to sail, where he started teaching history, and where he met and married his beloved Elizabeth. He was a respected professor and scholar, and David published a significant work on Lord Selborne in South Africa and made many contributions to ongoing research on British imperial policy.

More than anything, teaching was his passion, and he enjoyed every day of his career in the History Department of Mount Allison University. He had a unique ability to be able to draw out the very best from his students. He instilled a drive for knowledge, laughter, and integrity in all who knew him. Above all, he cherished his time with his family. In addition to his mother, David will be profoundly missed by his wife, Elizabeth, his children, Beth, Margaret, Alice, Charles, and his brother, Jim Torrance (Cindy), and Jim's children, Tina and Danny. He will also be lovingly remembered by his extended family, his nieces and nephews, his friends, his colleagues, and his students.

We are so grateful for the care and compassion that David received from the Extra-Mural Team and from all his health professionals. At 2 pm on Fri., Nov. 13, a funeral service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sackville, N.B. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, David's funeral service will be by invitation only, but it may be watched via Live-stream by visiting David's obituary on www.jonesfuneralhome.ca. After the internment, a reception will be held at David's home from 4:30-8:30 pm, 1 British Settlement Road, to which all are welcome as we follow the N.B. government's rules for COVID. James died Dec. 13, 2020 at home in North Kawartha, Ont., aged 83. He passed away very suddenly and without pain when his heart simply, quietly, gave out. Jim is survived by his wife Molly Moldovan, children Jill (Artsci’82), Pete ( Sc’85), and Sylvia, grandchildren Jane Thomson (Artsci’00), and Alex Thomson, and ex-wife Mary Ellen Baker (Arts’59). Jim is also survived by his loving dogs, Roscoe and Kanya.
Jim studied civil engineering at Queen’s, where he developed strong lifelong friendships and an enduring love of engineering. After university, Jim worked in the construction industry in Montreal. He had an unceasing passion for construction, continuing his work in the industry right up to the day he died. Some of the more notable projects he was associated with were Habitat (1967) and the Olympic Stadium (1976) in Montreal and a villa called “La Belle Creole” (1967–69) in St. Martin. He also drove projects in Toronto in conjunction with Lett Smith Architects: the Princess of Wales Theatre and the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery.
Jim’s biggest gift was his enormous cheerful personality and a passion for life that included everyone around him. He was, in equal measure, respected and loved by those who entered his orbit through his various pastimes and work experiences. The friendships he made remained strong and enduring.

Ken, 93, died Jan. 27, 2021. Ken grew up in Burlington and like so many young men, didn’t know what he wanted to be. After Grade 13, seeking adventure, he went out west to work in a logging camp then hitchhiked home a year later to study history at Queen’s. Already a member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, he participated in the model parliament and sang and danced in the annual student revue. Queen’s ignited a lifelong passion for history, and Canadian history in particular, which he shared with high school students for 35 years in the classroom and beyond. As history head at Laurier CI, he initiated annual board-wide conferences for senior history students in Scarborough on pressing issues of the day – China, Quebec, US-Canada relations – and became known as Mr. History Conference. Straight out of teacher’s college, he married beautiful “Babs”, Alice Irene Caldwell (Arts’51, BA’63), whom he first encountered at Queen’s, and had four children. He was a lifelong NDPer who worked in every election campaign until he was 88, ever optimistic that one could make the world a better place. He and Babs retired to Port Hope and for 30 glorious years they shared their pool, garden and scotch with friends on the back porch. For a while, they were active in the Arts’50 alumni association. Curious, energetic and enthusiastic, Ken devoured books, loved music, took stunning photos. He had a sly sense of humour and liked a good argument. He died on the same date Babs did 14 years earlier. As he liked to say to departing visitors, ‘Fare Well.’ He is survived by children Martha (BA’75), Chris, Pam, and Wendy; grandchildren Lucie (BA Hons.’13) and Johanna Simco, and Ben and Maxine Tancock.

It is with deep sadness but with gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the sudden passing of Graeme Sutherland, who passed away peacefully on April 26, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.
Loving husband to his wife of 49 years, Renate (née Bidner), father to his cherished sons, Ian (Meghan) and Peter (Pasquale), and special grandad to Lauren whom he adored, caring brother to Emeline (John), dear brother-in-law to Astrid (Jim) and Dieter (Betty), and esteemed uncle to Jamie, Peggy, Tim, Chris and Christian. Born in Shawinigan, QC, to parents Margaret MacDonald and Hugh Sutherland, formerly of Amherst, Nova Scotia,
Graeme was raised in Montreal West, where he developed life-long friendships. A graduate of ����ֱ�� and MacDonald College, he spent 32 years as a high school math teacher and school administrator for the former Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal (now EMSB).
In retirement, Graeme enjoyed serving as a director of the former Robinson Residence for Retired Teachers, singing in his church choir and with the Cantabile Chorale, and travelling the world with Renate (and occasionally with his sons). He was an active, contributing member of his church community at Cedar Park United – a community in which he found great joy and nurtured many friendships. A teacher, a mentor, a man of deep faith, an amazing storyteller and puzzle-solver, and a great family man, friend, and wonderful neighbour.
Thoughtful and patient, Graeme was also a terrific listener and always showed tremendous respect, empathy, and kindness. An avid reader and a lifelong learner, he was curious about everything and took a keen and sincere interest in the lives of all those around him. All who knew him will remember his smile, terrific sense of humour and contagious laugh. He will be dearly missed and will be forever in our hearts and thoughts.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Badawy and the ICU medical team at the Montreal Neurological Institute for the compassionate care he received in his final days. John William Shirokoff died tragically on Jan. 9, 2020. He is survived by his siblings, Peter Shirokoff (Sc’77), Patricia Ghent (Artsci’78, Ed’79) and Catherine Evans (Sc’83), and extended family.
John was an associate professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University for 20 years. There, he became known as a dedicated teacher, mentor, and researcher. He made significant contributions in the areas of materials science, corrosion, and asphaltène characterization. He was especially known in the scientific community for his work in asphaltène characterization, for which he received the Prince Mohammad bin Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud Prize for Scientific Excellence.
More recently, Dr. Shirokoff’s research focused on corrosion of materials. He was collaborating with major industrial partners, including Bombardier and Suncor. To address the devastation caused by wildfires, he collaborated with Bombardier to find ways to improve the properties of metals in contact with saline water to allow water bombers to scoop water from the ocean. He was a firm believer in experimental research. His work was recognized with a number of awards and major research grants. In addition to his research that had an impact on humanity,
John was a rare and amazing, polite personality who took the time to talk to the people around him. Colleagues, staff, students, and friends remember him for different reasons, but everyone will remember him as someone who always had something interesting to say and often with a twinkle in his eye.

Francis Douglas Pollock, 82, died Oct. 21, 2020, after a lengthy battle with cancer. His more than 40-year career as a family physician was spent in Kelowna, B.C., first with the Underhill Clinic, then later with Group One Medical, of which he was a founding member.
Doug was much appreciated in the community for his long-term dedication to the well-being of his patients. He enjoyed a full life with family, colleagues, and friends and avidly pursued gardening, skiing, travel and music, especially opera. He had fond early memories of several summers spent working at the Queen’s University Biological Station. Doug is survived by his wife, Beth, nee Emslie, his daughters, Heather, Alison, and Susan and their families, and his sister, Eleanor Pollock Dills (BA’61). His father, Harold Stockwell Pollock (BSc’32, MSc’32), had a distinguished career as a professor of Electrical Engineering at Queen’s.

Russell Delbert "Del" McKnight, M.D., age 88, of Palm Coast, FL., passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 8, 2021. Dr. McKnight was born in Toronto, Canada, to Elgin and Ethel McKnight of St. Catharines, Ontario. He graduated from ����ֱ�� Medical School (MD'60), Kingston, Ontario, Canada, and became Board certified in Psychiatry.
Dr. McKnight practiced Clinical and Administrative Psychiatry in Canada and subsequently immigrated to the United States with his family. Retiring from private practice in Morristown, TN, he and his wife relocated to Palm Coast, FL. He enjoyed the arts, travel, and engaging in conversation with people.
His wife Catherine survives him, sons Darcy and Peter, daughter Christine, four grandchildren: Péter, Mikaela, William and Toby McKnight, and brother Eric McKnight (and wife Judy). He is predeceased by his brother Gerald McKnight (survived by his wife, Joan). A private memorial service will be held in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, at a later date. On May 2, 2021, at the age of 90, D. Ian Fraser passed away in Toronto. Born in Perth, Ontario on Feb. 20, 1931, only child of Donald and Doris Fraser. Survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia and daughters, Pamela Valentine, Alison Abou-Heif Ovenell, Margot Withey, and Jill Fraser.
After obtaining his degree from Queen’s University, he joined The Canada Life Assurance Company, retiring in 1995 as an executive vice-president and secretary of the company. He then served for 10 years as secretary-treasurer of the National Sanitarium Association, continuing on the Board of Trustees for a further five years.
While enjoying success in his business career, the focus of his life was always his family. Ski weekends in the winter and cottage life at Steenburg Lake in the summer were the foundation of his family life. Always an enthusiastic sportsman, he participated in football, hockey, squash, tennis, hiking, skiing, and canoe trips.
Ian and Pat traveled to many countries and loved to share their favourite travel spot, Bermuda, with their family. Throughout his life, Ian was involved in various areas of community service, including Eglinton St. George's United Church and Senior Peoples' Resources in North Toronto. He helped deliver Meals on Wheels well into his 90th year.
The time he spent at the University Club included lunches, squash games and fitness classes, which eventually turned into a book club and lunches at the round table with his close circle of friends. Ian was a devoted family man who demonstrated warmth, humility, generosity and kindness in his daily life. He was always interested and involved in the lives of his four daughters and nine grandchildren. He kept up with them by attending their sports events and social functions and staying current with the latest social media.
Beloved husband of Pat, cherished father of Pamela, Alison, Margot, and Jill. Dear father-in-law of Scott Valentine, Phil Ovenell, Rich Withey, Richard O’Brien and the late Frank Abou-Heif. Loving grandfather of Andrew (Sara Valentine) and Peter Valentine, Justine (Yassine Khechim) and Charlotte Abou-Heif, Erica, Richard, and Thomas Withey, and Madeleine and Alexander O’Brien. Dear great-grandfather of Lucy and Samantha Valentine and Mateo and Paloma Valentine.

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Frances announces her passing on Sunday January 3, 2021. Frances was a loving wife to the late Hedley and older sister to brother Edward Flynn. A wonderful mom and mother-in-law to Laurie Tilley, Kerry and Sue Cross and Marni and Peter Stone. Treasured nana to Erin, Jay, Jeff, Allison, Patrick and Jennifer. Great-grandmother to Hudson and Silas.
She was born in Montreal but raised in Kingston, Ont. She met her future husband at ����ֱ��, then moved west to settle in a small town called Oakville where she lived her entire married life on Gloucester Ave. Frances was a lifelong friend to many and enjoyed numerous social activities such as, playing bridge well into her 90s, gourmet luncheons, university women's club, sailing, curling and cottage life on Lake Mazinaw. Her affiliation with Knox Presbyterian Church, where she was an active member of the choir, spanned many years. Travel abroad to visit with family was also something she always enjoyed. Friends and family came together for a joyous celebration of Frances's 100th birthday — she passed just shy of her 104th. We would like to thank the entire team at Creekway Village, especially the staff on Lakeshore for their kind and caring ways with "Frannie" over the past 9 years. Kathryn Emily Cook (Artsci’79), 63, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021. She was a great-great-granddaughter of the Rev. John Cook, the first Principal and Chancellor of Queen’s University. She is survived by her husband, Andrew Faulkner (Artsci’82), daughter Gwyneth, and her sisters, Nancy Cook Bruns (Meds’79), and Carolyn Cook.
Kathy was on the Queens Track Team from 1975-1979, and excelled in the 400-metre sprint. After graduating with BSc in Biology she worked in Jerry Wyatt’s lab in Kingston before she joined CUSO International and spent three years in Papua New Guinea, where she met Andrew. After returning to Canada, she completed her MSc in Soil Sciences at the University of British Columbia in 1994. In Victoria, Kathy worked in a federal lab, taught soils sciences, and with Andrew ran their IT consultancy. Kathy was active in the United Church, and the broader community, as a volunteer on many environmental, community, and social justice issues. She campaigned for the preservation of the Peace River Valley. Most recently, she supported refugees from Afghanistan, The Gambia and Syria.

Joan died Jan. 31, 2021, in Ottawa. Daughter of the late Colin E. Macpherson (BCom’26), and the late Joan (Hamilton) Macpherson of Kingston, she was known as Libby. Beloved wife of Eden Cloutier, (MBA’68, PhD’84), loving mother of Gillian Smith (Artsci’96), of Toronto and Alison Cloutier (PhD, University of Toronto) of Ottawa. Predeceased by her infant son, Peter Colin. Nana to darling granddaughters Aurélie and Clémentine Smith, and fond step-grandmother to Arnaud Smith (Artsci’18). Dear sister of Catherine Fee (Artsci’91), of Kingston and Barbara Lisson of Victoria.
Libby grew up in Kingston, always considering it home. In her last year at Queen’s, Libby met dashing RMC cadet Eden. They married on Dec. 15, 1962 and went on to spend their early years at RCAF stations in the Prairies. They returned to Kingston so that Eden could pursue his MBA and Libby worked in the periodicals section of Douglas Library. After working in Montreal, they returned to Kingston for Eden’s PhD. Eden’s career took them to Ottawa where they raised their family. Her family and friends will dearly miss her newsy letters, always filled with curated, underlined clippings.

Helen (Armstrong) Bronskill, 92, widow of Eric Bronskill (BCom’48) (1999) died peacefully at the Kingston Health Sciences Centre on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020. She is survived by her five children, Richard (M.Mus. U of T), Reginald (BA Queen’s), Kathryn (BA Queen’s), Alan (Env. Waterloo), Anne Enns (BA & B.Ed. Queen’s), her grandchildren, Adrick, Caelan, Kathryn, Tegan, Nicolas, Camille, Emerson, Elliot, Ainsley, and Simone (BA Queen’s); and her three great-grandchildren, Lucas, Kezia, and Ryan.
She was an avid weaver, opera lover, and supporter of the arts in Kingston & community programs such as Lunch by George. In 1943 at age 16, she became a Farmerette when the farm labour shortage was acute during WW2; she said it was one of the best experiences of her life. She was famous for her knitted baby clothes.

Dr. J. Wayne Bates passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital. Wayne is survived by parents James and Doreen Bates, wife Peggy Bates, daughters Lori Bates and Megan Balske (Timm), sons Michael Bates and Bradley Balske (Shannon), grandchildren Trinity and Caiden, brother David Bates (Cindy), sister Sharon Penty (David), and many nieces and nephews. Born in Hamilton and raised in North Bay, Ont., he graduated from Queen’s University, Faculty of Medicine, 1969.
Wayne served his community as a family physician, anesthetist and coroner for 45 years. Additionally, he spent many tireless nights working as an emergency physician at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, as well as delivering many local babies. He was greatly beloved by the patients under his care. Wayne had a passion for hockey, fishing, boating, golfing, gardening, wildlife conservation and education. He had a unique sense of humour and took great delight in telling a joke or pulling a prank. Wayne was an animal lover and rarely without a canine companion at home. In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting stamps with the Barrie District Stamp Club and was an avid member of the Orillia Fish & Game Conservation Club. Cremation has taken place.

On Tue., Dec. 29, 2020, Kye Christian Andrepoulos, beloved son of Christine Andreopoulos and the late Chris Andreopoulos (-2007), passed away suddenly at the age of 28, in Toronto.
Kye was born on May 22, 1992, in Toronto, at Women's College Hospital. He brought great joy to everyone around him, especially his parents. Kye was an extraordinary young man — social, laid back and approachable. He had the rare gift of being a great listener and was known as an interesting conversationalist who could debate any topic with a keen wit, humour, and intelligence. His energy and creativity were boundless.
He was talented, whether it was music (especially drums, where he was self-taught), writing (short stories/poetry/commentaries) or analytics and business (Bell, Flipp, Briq). He was also an awesome Karaoke partner and sang and danced as if no one was watching. His joie de vivre was inspiring to many. Kye was forward-thinking and extremely curious about the world and the people in it. He was loving, kind, gregarious, full of life and ambition, an innovator who had big dreams and worked tirelessly to try to realize them.
He packed a lot of experience into his young life, from volunteering across Canada with the Katimavik program, to heading many committees at ����ֱ��, where he studied Economics and Politics, to earning a full scholarship on an exchange to St. Andrews in Edinburgh, Scotland, and completing an internship in London, England. He travelled to many countries and loved diverse cultures and foods, especially his Asian spicy soups. He even took a gap year after high school (Jarvis) to study feminism and feminist literature at Inglenook school for half a year.
Kye was an old soul with wisdom beyond his years. He was selfless and loyal to his friends and especially to his mom Christine, with whom he shared an incredibly close bond, despite the many challenges he faced in recent years. Kye will be remembered for his kindness, encouragement, loyalty, quick wit, brilliant sense of humour, energy, and infectious smile. He was a positive influence on many and will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched. His loving and devoted dad would have been so proud of him. Kye will be sorely missed by his many friends, and especially by his mother, who has lost her son and best friend. She is consoled by the last words he said to her, "I love you." Helen, 95, predeceased by husband Tim (A.T.E.) Anderson (BCom’48) in 1995, died peacefully, Jan. 8, 2021, in Ottawa.
Helen was part of a long line of Queen’s grads, including parents Clifford Bracken and Florence (Willson) Bracken, siblings Clifford, Connie, Lawrence, Ruth, and Bruce, children Scott Anderson (Com’73), Sharron Anderson Barker (Arts’76, Ed’77), and Ian Anderson (Arts’84), and four grandchildren.
Helen is survived by Scott (Heather), Sharron (David Barker), and Ian (Margaret Hancock); her grand-children, Sean (Sacha), Alison (Ian), Adam (Lily), Gillian (Lee), Rachael, and Rebecca (Curt); and her great-grandchildren, Claire, Aubrey, Jack, Cameron, Declan, and Graham.
Helen was deeply engaged with Queen’s. She served on the Board of Trustees and was a founding member of the Ban Righ Centre. In 2008, she established the Helen Bracken Anderson Bursary, and in 2000, she was awarded the Grunnan Onarach Award (Ottawa Branch).
