Margaret, wife of Paul B. Green (1931-1998), mother of Robert (Ann Arts'79, Ed'81), Peter (Rebecca) and Kate Artsci'89; grandmother to Nancy (Albert), Stephanie, Amy, and Jenny, Stewart, Jessie, and Grace, Fiona and Miranda, passed on Dec. 10 after a brief illness. She was 88.

Margaret was born in Hamilton, Ontario, to W. Gordon BA'18, MD'21 and Jessie E. Cornett (Ewart) BA'21 in October 1933, a younger sister to Dr. Robert W. G. Cornett (1928-2003) Meds'52. More than 40 members of Margaret’s extended family graduated from Queen’s since 1885.

Margaret was a true renaissance woman, excelling in everything she turned her hand to, most notably the sciences. She was the only woman to graduate with a Major in Biology in her class of Queen’s Art and Science 1955. Deemed the most promising woman graduate that year, she was awarded the Marty Scholarship to begin a Ph.D. at Radcliffe College, Harvard. Around the labs, she met Paul. They married in 1957 and departed for 18 months, based in Zurich where Paul had a postdoctoral position.

By 1960, they were back in the U.S., settling at Stanford where Paul was a Biology Professor at Stanford University. Many visitors to the home on the Stanford campus would have seen the famous “map” with a coloured pin for the places each family member (children, in-laws and grandchildren) had travelled. Margaret had a pin in 78 countries by best estimate.

A proud dual citizen since 1974, Margaret kept deep and daily connections to Canada via her extended family. Maple leaf shaped earrings were her talisman on airline flights. A Canadian flag was always somewhere in the house and her room in her last years.

A memorial service was held on Jan. 8, 2022.

Sam Young passed away on Feb. 1, 2021. He was 85.

Beloved husband of Mary Patricia (Linke) Young (BNSc'62) for 58 years; dear father of Robert Young (Brenda), the late Beth Young (Bruce Cupskey), Barbara Smith-Young (BNSc'93) (Greg Smith-Young), and Sharon Fryer (Ian); loving grandfather of Rachel, Taylor, Liam, Caleb, Cameron, Duncan, Quinn, and Max; dear brother-in-law of Peggy Cambridge, along with Barb and Sedgewick Sinclair. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Sarah Elizabeth Young; parents-in-law, Henry and Catharine Linke; sister, Joy Scott; and brothers-in-law, Bob Scott and Ted Cambridge.

Although Sam was born and raised mostly in Toronto, during the Second World War (age 3-9), he lived in Belfast/Dromore (Northern Ireland). He graduated from University of Toronto with a BA in 1959 and then graduated with a MA in Classics at ����ֱ�� in 1964.

Sam taught high school for 47 years in Kingston, Galt, and Mitchell. Sam was loved, respected and appreciated by his students and colleagues through the years. Sam – dad and grandpa – will be missed by all whom he held dear. As a man of principle and Christian faith, he was an active member of Main Street United Church, including positions of leadership. Sam was an avid swimmer at the Mitchell Lions pool and Stratford YMCA. He was known for his love of reading, languages and teaching. One always made a point of speaking or writing in a grammatically correct manner in his presence. Sam’s attention to detail was also evident in his meticulous house painting projects, where he and Pat had lived for some 49 years. In addition to lovingly maintaining the family home, he was also the resident handyman for the homes of his children.

Barbara Theresa Wood passed away on March 16, 2022. Predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Frank Wood Jr., and brother Colin. She is survived by Malcolm Collins, her loving partner of 13 years; her children, Brian (Larisa), Lisa, and David; grandchildren, Trista, Justin, Ryan, Josh, Bradley, Mark, Sarah, Omar, and Adam; her siblings, Beverley (Jim) and Suzanne (Ted); nephew Christopher; and her long-time housekeeper, Maria.

Barbara was born in Brockville, Ont. Her thirst for knowledge, love of travel, and passion for discovery took her to all seven continents. As her son, Brian (who has lived on many of these continents), recalls: “Mom was a hit on every visit, particularly in Egypt, Abu Dhabi, and Ho Chi Minh City; her inquisitive nature, energy, and joie de vivre brought the best out in everyone.” Nothing in life was too challenging. She was an ‘A’ student, studying Latin, English, and Roman history at ����ֱ��. She was also an avid athlete — an ace basketball player, golfer, and swimmer. Barb moved 15 times in 30 years with her devoted husband Frank, making friends everywhere she went — from the gas fields of Jumping Pound, Alta., where her closest neighbours were grazing cows, to the vibrancy of Caracas, Venezuela, where she embraced Spanish and life with gusto. She eventually settled in Oakville, Ont., where she taught bridge and opened her own bridge club. With a new partner, Malcolm, a retired physics professor, she continued to travel, including to more exotic destinations. She revived her Spanish studies and embraced, with the same zest as always, her passion for books, crosswords, Sudoku, and swimming, as well as the theatre and fine dining. Life for Barbara meant living it to the fullest; embracing everything with enthusiasm and determination. She departed, feeling fulfilled and ready to say goodbye.

Richard Frank "Dick" Walton passed away on Jan. 18, 2022. Predeceased by his wife, Susan "Sue" McNett. He is survived by his six children, Laurie Walton (Dave Frey), Elinor Bridges (Ricky), Marion Lent (Jeffrey), Richard Walton II (Lerenda), Robert Walton (Flor Elena Galan-Amaro), and Diane "Dizy" Walton (Sarah Thach); and 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Jesse Frey and Lily Walton; Eric (Hannah and great-grandchildren Alex and Teddy), Jed, and Garrett (Brittany and great-grandchild Isla Rose) Bridges; Esther and Clara Lent; Elizabeth, Mary, Mark, and Anna Jeanett Walton; and Caroline Walton; Otis, Miles and Rustin Walton-Thach. He is also survived by his brother Ken, four nephews and their children.

Richard was born Aug. 13, 1935 in Black River, N.Y. to Esther Bettinger "Betty" Walton and Clifford Horace Walton. Dick pushed himself very hard throughout his life. He was valedictorian of his class at Black River High School. He was a talented athlete and attended Bates College on a baseball scholarship. An avid naturalist, he spent college summers working as an aquatic biologist for the N.Y. Conservation department. At Bates, he met Susan and they married in 1957. They were married for 63 years: she died in August 2021.

Dick wanted to be a doctor from an early age and earned his medical degree at Queen’s. He trained at Boston General Hospital for his residency. In 1963, he joined a small medical practice in Holden, M.A. as a family physician in an era when doctors regularly made house calls and before 911 had been established. He was an early adopter of new medical techniques and approaches that are now taken for granted, such as CPR, alcoholism, panic disorder, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. His perceptive diagnoses and aggressive treatments saved the lives of many patients and friends with uncommon conditions.

He was exceptionally generous and caring. He helped his patients find work and gave them work if he was able to. Some patients were included in family events and were looked after from then on. He knew people couldn't take their medications if they couldn't afford them and that lonely people need friendship and inclusion. At work, he showed appreciation for everyone who showed up and contributed to the cause, whether that person was the custodian or the chief medical officer. He didn't come from a wealthy background and he saw past hierarchy at work and in society. Dick helped found the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, where he became the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. He was a role model for medical residents, students, and fellow faculty and a nationally respected advocate for family medicine during the specialty's formative years. In 1977, he moved to Asheville, N.C., to direct the family practice residency at Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC). He helped establish one of the most innovative and well-respected family medicine residencies in the U.S., integrating behavioral medicine into family medicine practice and training and collaborating with therapists to develop the family circle method, a tool to understand complex family systems and how they impacted individuals' health.

Dick loved planting trees, berries, and raising animals on the small farm he and Sue had in Alexander, N.C. He loved the beautiful sunsets at their farm and he and Sue would often stand in the side yard together, watching the sun go down. After their kids were grown and it came time to sell the farm and move back to town, they placed a conservation easement on the property to save it from ever being developed.

Dick and Sue were passionate, lifelong advocates for social justice causes and were arrested together at age 77 for civil disobedience in support of marriage equality. They were active members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville for 45 years. A loyal friend, Dick attended annual high school reunions in Black River and regularly visited with and communicated with friends, colleagues, and former patients all over the country. He was an attentive and supportive father and grandfather.

For the last year of his life, Dick lived in the skilled nursing area at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community (N.C.) as his Alzheimer's required more care. He was happy there: he often walked the halls wearing his ����ֱ�� hat and windbreaker and checked on the other residents as if he were still doing medical rounds. Staff at Deerfield cared for him in a way that was helpful, respectful, and kind. Dick and Sue's children are grateful for the good care both their parents received at Deerfield.

Peter Carr Thompson passed away on May 12, 2021. He was 93. Beloved husband of Joan (née Allison) (Artsci'50); loving father of Anne, Ian (Meds‘79), Michael (Artsci‘79) and

David (Sc‘86); grandfather of Connor (Artsci‘05), Owen, Bronwyn (Artsci‘11), Hugh, Madeline, Margaret, Henry (Com‘19) and Peter.

Peter worked for many years as the manager of engineering at Canadian General Electric. He was an avid bridge player and golfer. He played bassoon in the Peterborough Symphony for many years and sat on the board at St. Joseph's at Fleming, a seniors home in Peterborough, at its inception.

Dr. John Robert Taylor passed away on April 20, 2022. John is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Cathy (Artsci’89); sons, David (Artsci’91) and Peter; and grandchildren, Taylor, Anna, Maja, and Isla.

Born in Kirkland Lake, Ont., to Boyd (Sc’35) and Dorothy Taylor, John graduated from Queen’s Faculty of Medicine in 1963. His impact on the medical profession spanned five decades. A pioneering surgeon, he was president of the Canadian Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, president of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons, and associate-editor of the Canadian Journal of Plastic Surgery, having co-founded the publication in 1992. As an educator, John taught countless medical residents, lectured at the University of Toronto, and was examiner for the Medical Council of Canada. As a philanthropist, John contributed a wealth of knowledge and experience as chairman of the Dr. A. Ross Tilley Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation, and trustee of the Guinea Pig Club in Canada. Resolved to advance his profession with greater integrity, John chaired both the Canadian and American Ethics Committees of the ASAPRS and chaired the Canadian Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities. While John pursued this work with determination and humility, he was prodigiously acknowledged by his colleagues and country with the Queen Elizabeth II 25th Anniversary Medal, the Canadian Distinction Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Allen Frederick Spraggett passed away on July 19, 2022. He was 90. He is survived by his wife, Marion; children, Stephen, Alanna (Peter), Sandra (Bob Spies) (Sc‘80), Dennis and Kathryn (Bobby); proud grandpa to Sean, Carly (Mike), Camille and Eric; brother of the late Charles (Ruth); son of the late Henry and Gertrude Spraggett.

Allen was a journalist, author, broadcaster, psychical researcher, astrologer, and ordained minister. Throughout his life, he was passionate about learning, reading, music, fine art, and his family, including many pets, which fed his soul and provided purpose to his journey. His ability to tell a story with great humour and insight left a lasting impression on all who met him. Perhaps Allen's greatest gift was his ability to empathize, support, and provide comfort to family, friends, and strangers. He relied on these qualities as he pursued the many avenues of his work.

Serving as pastor ordained by the Open Door Evangelical Churches to congregations throughout Eastern Ontario commencing in 1954, Allen studied at ����ֱ�� and ����ֱ�� Theological College. Eventually his life's work would lead him to be reordained as a Spiritual Science Minister and granted a Doctor of Ministry by the International College of Spiritual and Psychic Sciences in 1986.

Allen worked at the Toronto Star as religion editor (1962-69), daily columnist (1969-1971), and wrote the syndicated weekly column ‘The Unexplained’ (1972-1977). His curious mind led him to research and write 11 books about paranormal activities and the possibility of an afterlife, including biographical works on notable figures related to the field of parapsychology, including: Kathryn Kuhlman: The Woman Who Believed in Miracles (1970) and The Psychic Mafia (1976). Allen became a popular broadcaster in the 1970s and 80s, creating and hosting programs for radio (CFRB, CFNY, and CKMW) and television, including The Occult and innovative panel show Beyond Reason (CBC).

Throughout his career, Allen was sought after as a speaker, lecturer, expert, and consultant with his work, bringing much attention to the developing field of parapsychology. His innovative broadcast programs made information about psychic phenomena, including research in the belief of life after death, accessible to the general public.

Retiring from public life after a difficult battle with leukemia in the late 1980s, Allen primarily practiced as an insightful astrologer and gifted hypnotist for private clients. Allen lived an extraordinary, meaningful life, and the loss of his physical presence among us has gutted his family. His only real regret was having to part from Marion, whose name brought a smile to his lips even as he slipped away. Until his final days, he was delighted to share a laugh or a story with anyone lucky enough to spend a few moments by his side. His genuine interest in talking to someone could make them feel like the most important person in a crowded room.

Now that he's journeyed into the great beyond, he will finally find the answers to questions that shaped his life's work exploring the unexplained.

Lynn passed away May 25, 2022. She is survived by her daughters, Deanna and Danielle; her partner, Mike Darlington; and her sister, Gail Gauthier. She also leaves behind many dear friends.

Lynn worked tirelessly with clients with acquired brain injuries and was a strong advocate on their behalf. She left us too soon and will be deeply missed.

David Edward Richards passed away most unexpectedly on Aug. 5, 2022. Dave was predeceased by his wife of 36 years, Elizabeth Anne Christie, and youngest son, Michael Edward Richards. Dave leaves behind his loving wife of 24 years, Martha; and his children: Peter Richards (Corinne), Jane Brebner (Jim), and Leslie Richards; grandchildren: Kyle (Kate), Annie, Andrew, Callahan, Chloe, Brooke, Jack, Cole, and Ryan; stepchildren: Michele Young (Ted), Mac Plymale (Cassie); grandchildren: Malena, Camryn, Ari, and Caleigh. Also survived by his sister Margo Bulmer, sister-in-law Marlene Wilson, brother-in-law James Christie, and wife, Kathy, and their families.

Dave was born in Chatham, Ont., then lived his formative years in Chicago, Illinois, and Hamburg, N.Y. From there, the family moved to Lambeth, where Dave worked hard and played hard until he moved to Florida in 1997.

Dave had a very successful career in frozen food. He grew up the son of a pioneer in the frozen vegetable industry — his work life highlighted by his tenure at Produce Supply and as vice president of Algonquin Mercantile (Hardee Farms). In 1983, Dave ventured out as a founding partner of Strathroy Foods; a leading grower, processor, and packager of frozen vegetables. He successfully led the business until it was sold.

Dave was passionate about sports. His natural athleticism and competitive spirit led him to enjoy a successful high school career as a football/basketball player at London South Collegiate Institute. After South, he went on to play for the Queen’s Golden Gaels football team as quarterback and defensive back (1956 -1960). He always spoke fondly of his time at Queen’s and of the lifelong friends he made while a student.

Following university, he developed his skills as a strong skier/golfer. He loved his long-standing membership at the London Hunt Club, until he took up playing at Prestwick Golf Club in Florida. Dave also played squash/tennis and was a fan of the Detroit Lions. He was extremely supportive of his children’s athletic endeavours, rink-side and courtside.

Dave lived out his last 25 years in Ormond Beach, Florida. He and Martha have a lovely home that they generously shared with family members; the grandchildren have fond memories of trips down south to enjoy the sun, surf, and golf with grandpa and oma. In 1998, Dave became an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). He consistently attended his group meetings, often taking on the role of sponsor.

Dave will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and AA community. He will be remembered for his kindness, easy smile, and calm, sweet nature.

Donalda Margaret McGeachy, née Campbell. She was 102. She is missed and loved by her four children: Lynn, Joan, Neil, and Ruth; her six grandchildren: Jana (Mike), Kristin (Mike), Dave (Leslie), Diane, Cynthia, and Cameron; and her seven great-grandchildren:  Journey, Camden, Lucas, Ben, Maddox, Nolan, and Mako. She was predeceased by her parents Milton and Hazel (née Dixon) Campbell and her brothers George and twins Wallace and Doug.

Donna lived an interesting life filled with opportunity, creativity and great changes. Although she was a “big city lady” who loved Toronto, Donna was fiercely proud of her pioneer beginning in Pelly, Sask., and the values she learned there. She was the only girl, with three older brothers. Her parents prized education and she was treated equally, rare for females at that time. Her father told her if he gave her money it could be taken from her, but no one could take away an education, so she also was able to go to university. She lived through the terrible prairie drought, the Great Depression, the Second World War, and had four children with her fellow Queen’s graduate ex-husband. She devoted herself to volunteer work, serving 25 years in the cancer field, including 12 years on the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation Board.  She also volunteered with  the Women’s Canadian Club, the Service League at London’s Victoria Hospital, and the Canadian Institute of International Affairs. She was a member of the Granite Club and the Heliconian, a club for female artists.

Dubbed “The Prima Donna”, she delighted in opera, ballet, classical music, and works of art.  She was a docent at the Art Gallery of Ontario, was herself a painter, and earned her Japanese seal after studying with a Japanese master for five years. She prized creativity and cultural pursuits and found her greatest joy in the arts, but she also shared a passion for politics with her father, a former Progressive Party MP. She and her brothers shared the vision their parents had for this country and their respect for hard work, integrity, and freedom. In her later years, she became an avid bridge player. Asked if she had any words to leave behind, she replied, “Thanks for the memories….”   

John Robert Larsen passed away on July 25, 2021. He was 61. He was predeceased by his father, Svend. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy. Loving husband of Andrea for almost 33 years; dear father of Christian and Allison; older brother of David Larsen (Sandra Larsen), Peter Larsen (Lori Yauk), Karen Dance (Paul Dance), and Joanne Larson (Glenn Larson). He will be missed by his nieces and nephews.

John was born in Sudbury, June 12, 1960. He attended Alexander PS, Wembley PS, Sudbury Secondary High School, Cambrian College, and then transferred to Queen’s for his BSc and MSc.

Throughout his academic career, John received a variety of academic awards and scholarships.

All his life, John valued sports as a player and coach, not only for the physical benefits, but also for the social and emotional gains that went along with being involved. He played and coached in a variety of sport leagues and most importantly established lifelong friendships that he held dear to his heart. He was involved in high school football and other sports during his time at Sudbury Secondary High School and played provincial level lacrosse. He played Spartan football for seven seasons. During that time, he played five different positions, was team captain, and won numerous Spartan team awards. He later returned to be part of the Spartan coaching team for five years. He helped establish and coach in the Joe MacDonald Youth Football League.

At Queen’s, while working on his engineering degree, he played for the Queen’s Golden Gaels football team for four years (1982-1985). During the ’84 season, he shared the offensive captain position. He was part of the OQIFC Championship/Yates Cup Championship/Vanier Cup Finalist Team in 1983. He held the longest kick-off return record in the Vanier Cup and tied the Queen’s record for most touchdowns in a game with three in one half in ’84. He was a member of the OQIFC Championship/Atlantic Bowl Finalist team in 1984. He was inducted into the Queen’s Football Hall of fame in 2015 as a member of the 1983 Vanier Cup Finalist Team.

After his competitive playing days were over, John enjoyed recreational squash, skiing, baseball, basketball, and hockey — again, valuing the time he spent with friends and family. Ultimately golf became his go-to sport in the summer months and on some vacations.

John loved to travel and explore new locations. He loved food and flavours, spending many hours creating fabulous food in the kitchen for his family and friends. He loved history, reading, fishing, woodworking, and gardening.

John had a successful career in the mining industry. He initially worked for Fording Coal in B.C. and then returned to Sudbury to work at Inco/Vale. Later, he moved on to Cementation Canada and then Cementation USA, where he held a variety of positions, but ultimately was area manager of Eastern U.S. and Mexico. Rather than retiring, he became a consultant and ended his career working for Hatch Ltd.

John’s family and many friends will miss his blue eyes and smile, his hard work and competitive spirit, but mostly his love of life.

Dr. David William Hurst passed away June 17, 2021. He was 90. He was predeceased by his parents, Helen Miller and Richard Rankin Hurst; his beautiful wife, Janet (Davidson); his brother, Richard; and his twin sisters, Muriel and Marjorie. He is survived by his beloved BarBar (Barb Kooy of Colorado); cherished and revered by his four daughters: Nancy Savage (Mike Savage), Carolyn Hurst (Grant Westcott), Laura Roome (Tim Roome), and Valerie McMurtry (Armando Mano); adored by his eight grandchildren: Kate Carolan (Josh) and Ian Stephenson, David, Thomas and Matthew McMurtry, Jeffrey and Christopher Roome, and Charlotte Westcott; and was delighted by the recent arrival of his first great-grandchild, Louise Carolan.

Born in Charlottetown in 1931, a much-loved child of the Great Depression, David made his way west to “Upper Canada” to attend Queen’s and graduated Meds‘56. He completed three years of postgraduate surgery training in Kingston, and then received a fellowship to study abroad for three additional years in Liverpool and London, U.K. He completed his surgical training at Montreal General Hospital, and was admitted to the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) in 1963. He became a fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1977, and later in his career served a five-year term as a governor of the American College of Surgeons. David served as a consulting general surgeon at Port Colborne General Hospital and Welland General Hospital for over 35 years. Even after his “retirement” he continued to assist in surgeries and be available “on call’ into his 87th year.

A true Renaissance man, David had a full and interesting life outside of his work in medicine. He learned to play the piano as a child and carried his love of music throughout his life. He was the life of the party, leading impromptu piano singalongs and Christmas Eve celebrations. As the devoted son of a Presbyterian Temperance League mother, he never discovered wine until he was in his 30s — and then never more than a glass. “Everything in moderation...including moderation.” He learned to ski in Europe in his 30s and took it up with a passion: Canadian Rockies heli-skiing, European summits, and later Colorado with his beloved BarBar. He loved reading Second World War historical non-fiction, playing and watching golf, and playing and listening to jazz. He led a successful jazz series for many years at the Roselawn Theatre. He was a community activist and fought to save trees in his hometowns of Fonthill and later Port Colborne.

He was ahead of his time by bringing laparoscopic surgery and solar roof panels to Niagara. He loved a good party and hosted many. His most favourites were for the Welland Hospital O/R nurses and the epic annual laser regattas on Camelot Beach. He learned to fly in his 50s, earned his IFR rating and had flying adventures all over North America. He was invited to sit on the Civil Aviation Tribunal of Canada and Aviation Licence Tribunal of Ontario. He was team doctor for the Welland Jr. Hockey team and travelled with the team to Russia and Yugoslavia in the early ‘80s.

Undaunted by the task of raising four daughters, he proceeded to raise them like the sons he never had. Always a man of his word, he delivered on his promise to provide for each the following: straightened teeth, a good pair of skis and the ability to use them, a university degree (undergrad only), and one wedding each. Not a penny more — ok, except maybe for his baby, Valerie (Artsci’88), who wisely chose his alma mater, Queen’s. The things he loved the most helped him through the past two years of tough times. The Toronto Maple Leafs (he held on as long as he could!), Canada Dry Ginger Ale, The Globe and Mail, BarBar, and his adoring daughters.

A heartfelt thanks goes to so many people who helped dad through these last days, his many, many friends and colleagues, and especially the kind and caring staff at Lookout Ridge.

Dr. Al Hart passed away on March 23, 2022. He was 87.

Al was a proud member of Meds’58, regularly attending their reunions including their 60th in 2018. Al came from a family of Queen’s graduates including his mother, Hazel Michael (Arts’20); children, William Alan (Law’84) and Jocelyn (Artsci’83); and granddaughter, Catherine (Artsci‘15).

Al grew up in Oshawa with older siblings Elizabeth (Buffy) and John, where the family operated the Oshawa Dairy. Al achieved his childhood dream when he went to Queen’s and was accepted into medicine. He was a member of Medical House and was living there when Boo Hoo the bear – the real bear cub – came to stay. He was a Queen’s cheerleader and part of the Queen’s contingent that marched in the Macy’s parade and was profiled in Life Magazine in the mid-1950s.

Al met Leonor Haw (Arts’57) while at Queen’s and they married soon after graduation. Al interned at Kingston General Hospital and took a year of internal medicine in Kingston. He completed a residency in pediatrics at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) and a fellowship in endocrinology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Al, Leonor, and their four children – William Alan, Jocelyn, Timothy, and Paul – settled in Hamilton where Al was a pediatrician at Chedoke Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and was a consulting pediatrician with McMaster University Medical Centre after it opened in 1972. Al was a faculty member at McMaster’s School of Medicine and a founding director of Dawn Patrol, a group home for children and youth.

Al’s love of medicine and helping children, along with his connection to Queen’s, took him to Moose Factory’s hospital in the late 1970s and early 1980s, where he cared for Indigenous children, their mothers, and families. Al spoke fondly of travelling to the nursing stations up the James Bay and Hudson Bay coasts and he cherished the soapstone carvings he received as thanks for his care. Queen’s medical services program in Moose Factory started in 1965 with four pediatricians and the Faculty of Health Sciences continues to partner with the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority.

Al later settled in the North Bay area with his wife Hallie and was on staff at St. Joseph’s General Hospital until his retirement. Al lived his final years in Burlington, close to three of his children.

Kyla Graham and her baby, Maaike, both passed away on May 7, 2022. Kyla was 30 years old and Maaike was eight months old. Kyla and Maaike are survived by their loving and proud husband and father, Justin; parents and grandparents, Joyce and John and Marla and Doug; and a very large, loving, and caring extended family too numerous to mention.

Kyla was a very loving, kind, gentle, caring, generous, and thoughtful person. She was a very devoted wife and mother and always made sure everyone was well taken care of. Kyla was born in Calgary on Aug. 18, 1992. She was the third of four children and was very much an achiever. Kyla attended the Medicine Hat Christian School from Kindergarten to Grade 9. She was the valedictorian of her class. She graduated high school at Crescent Heights in 2010, again valedictorian. From there, she attended ����ֱ��, where she graduated with a master’s in molecular biology.

Kyla was active in many sports and achieved many awards and medals, especially in competitive swimming. She loved to bake, cook, knit, garden, volunteer, sing, and share her many gifts with others. Kyla returned home in 2017 to find work at the Crop Diversification Centre. She met the love of her life, Justin, and they married in 2019. She was employed by Grasslands School Division at the Junior High level working with the students, where she shared her knowledge, gifts, and talents with many students. Their dogs were very important to Kyla. She loved going for walks with Potter and Winnie along the canal. Family was also very important to Kyla. On Sept. 14, 2021, they were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, Maaike Anne. Maaike was very active and curious, determined to achieve whatever she set out to accomplish. She was so cuddly, loveable, very happy, and content. Kyla was so proud and fulfilled to have a beautiful, happy family.

Matt Alan Edwards passed away on May 20, 2022. He will be forever missed by his wife, Robin; and their daughter, Teslyn; parents, Al and Glenys; brother, David Edwards (Laura); sister, Susan Rankin (Brett); parents-in-law, Tim and Sandi Kane; brother-in-law, Mark Kane (Caity); and nieces and nephews: Samson and Amber Edwards; Thomas and Juliet Rankin; and Annalise, Finn, and Madelyn Kane. His extended family includes: aunt, Ada Wynn (Glyn); uncles, Marshall Charchun and Trevor Quigley; and cousins: Jeff, Robb, and Kerry; Bob and Jenny; Janine, Jim, and John. Matt was predeceased by his nephew, Cole Edwards, and aunts, Nancy Quigley and Nevis Charchun.

Born and raised in St. Albert, Matt was a brilliant athlete and a lifelong participant in sports, from the AAA and university levels to beer leagues. It was baseball, hockey, volleyball, and horseshoes where he showed his natural athleticism and created so many meaningful friendships. He was also incredibly creative: jamming on the drums or harmonica with friends; creating art, constructing games and events for family and friends; or being a wedding singer. And one knew everything would be done with a smile, a laugh and maybe rum.

Matt earned a civil engineering degree from Queen’s and enjoyed a fulfilling career as a professional engineer because there was no problem his amazing mind could not solve.

In 2000, Matt married his favourite person, Robin Kane, and in 2005, they welcomed the best part of their life, Teslyn. Matt cherished the privilege of being Teslyn’s dad. He loved coaching her, the family game nights, creating art together, visits to escape rooms, trying to catch waves in Mexico, and the newest hobby of paddle boarding. Matt, Robin, and Teslyn also loved their family vacation time in Mexico, Rhode Island, Jasper, and Robb.

His kindness, intelligence, creativity, sense of humour, charisma, and his laugh are some of the many things that we will always remember. Especially that laugh. Oh, that laugh.

While at the ballpark, Matt was 2 for 2 with a double and triple, when he passed away suddenly, surrounded by his team and family, doing what he loved.

Dean Lawrence Edgar passed away on Dec. 15, 2021. He will be forever missed by his wife, Lisa; their two incredible children, Chris and Cassie; and their dog, Charlie. He will be remembered with love by his parents, Gillie and Larry (Kim); his brothers, Tom (Alexis) and Billy (Jamie), and sister Jodi (Burke). His absence will be felt by his in-laws, Sandra and Graham and Dave (Jane) and their family; grandma Kay; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. Friends and colleagues will always remember his kindness.

Dean shared his strength, love, and support for others constantly. Dean loved and enjoyed almost all sports, either as a player, a coach, or a fan. He could often be found watching three games simultaneously and chatting about stats the whole time. He loved coaching and watching his teams win, but character and fairness were the most important things to Dean. An award was recently created in his name that will be presented yearly to the football player who best represents dedication, bravery, perseverance, and outstanding display of character — all traits that Dean showed throughout his life.

Dean was a rock for his family and friends, always offering to help others, even when he was dealing with his cancer diagnosis. He always put others first. Dean loved to laugh, particularly when recalling stories from the past, and he loved to tease others.

Kenneth Douglas Does passed away on April 26, 2021. He was liked and loved by many, and missing him most will be his wife of almost 60 years, Sharon, as well as his daughter, Karon (Joe); son, Mark (Liz); and granddaughter, Carmen.

Doug, as he was known to everyone, was born to Dutch immigrants in Ontario and grew up a car and technology enthusiast. He graduated a Tricolour Award winner from Queen’s with an electrical engineering degree and went on to a successful career spanning both private industry and public service. He was passionate about business and studied and taught many aspects of quality management, which eventually took him to western Canada.

And as hard as he worked, he played. His carpentry skill, combined with his love of trains, produced some magnificent basement model railroads. When he turned on music, it was most often an artist he had discovered at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, where he spent many happy summer days. He loved sports and coached his kids in a variety of them, but hockey (Go Oilers!) was always his favourite. He cheered to the end, battling esophageal cancer, with courage and dignity. He was a good man. The family wishes to extend gratitude to the many Ontario healthcare workers for their kindness and professionalism in helping Doug.

Susan Brooke passed away on April 7, 2022. She was 56. She is survived by husband Jan Trabandt and brother Peter Brooke. She was predeceased by her parents, Keith and Molly Brooke; and will be dearly missed by her cousins both near and far, and her many close friends.

Susan was born and raised in Ottawa where she attended Fisher Park High School. In 1988, she received a bachelor of commerce degree from Queen’s. After working a few years in Paris, she returned to Canada and received an MBA from the Ivey Business School at Western University in 1996.

Moving to Toronto, she enjoyed a successful career in strategic consulting for Bain & Company, Managerial Design, and later as an executive in risk management at TD Bank. She was an intelligent, hardworking, and accomplished colleague who brought much to the roles she took on. She also contributed her time generously to the Genetic Aortic Disorders Association, the Toronto General Hospital’s Patient Advocacy Committee, and the strategic planning committee for her golf community in Florida.

A skilled communicator, she could cut to the essence of a problem with great deftness, wit, and occasionally the well-timed use of an f-bomb, if the circumstances warranted.

Susan’s bright smile, welcoming ways and compassionate heart brought her many dear friends, made while living in Toronto, Punta Cana, Florida, and Collingwood, Ont. She had a way of gathering people around her and creating communities among them. Susan was also a traveler, curious about the world and the experiences that she and Jan might find in distant places, especially if they could be enjoyed in 5-star style. A round of golf, a glass of wine and laugh or two with friends to cap it all was a day well spent.

Allergies could not prevent her from sharing her life with her beloved (and supposedly hypoallergenic!) cats Zoe and Zorro. Her love for all cats anywhere also led her to contribute time to animal welfare organizations in Toronto and the Dominican Republic before joining the Georgian Triangle Humane Society in Collingwood as a shelter volunteer, fosterer of kittens and member of its board of directors.

David Andrew passed away in February 2022.

David was born in Redruth, U.K., in 1934, trained at the Falmouth School of Art and then at the Slade School in London from 1958-9. At that time he was greatly influenced by Ben Nicholson, (who showed interest in his work) and Piet Mondrian, and it was also then that he first became interested in the psychology of perception. Following his student days, David taught at the Bournemouth and Portsmouth Colleges of Art, moving to Queen’s in 1971 and retiring in 1995. He was instrumental in shaping the national reputation and direction of the department with his colleagues during this period. In 2004, Andrew returned to Cornwall U.K. where he married Sally Fleetwood in 2010.
