Accolades for the Review

Magazine pages from 2023 issues of the Alumni Review.

The Queen’s Alumni Review was recognized by three major awards programs representing both the education and publishing sectors this spring.

At the , the Alumni Review took the silver award for Portrait Photography for Wade Hudson’s striking spring 2023 cover photograph of faculty members from the Black Studies program. In the same category, photographer Jen Bernard took an honourable mention for the magazine’s summer 2023 cover image of Dr. Kelsey Jacobson. The magazine also took home honourable mentions in three of the top categories: Cover Grand Prix (for the spring 2023 issue), Editor Grand Prix (for Alumni Review editor Ruth Dunley), and Best Magazine, Special Interest.

At the , the premier competition for Canadian trade and professional magazines, the magazine was again lauded for Wade Hudson’s cover image, receiving the silver award for Best Photograph, while two other Alumni Review photographers, Johnny C.Y. Lam and Hélène Cyr, received honourable mentions in the same category. In the writing categories, two alumnae, Tka Pinnock and Carly Weeks, received honourable mentions for Best Feature, while writer Peter Simpson took the silver award for Best Profile for his story about alumnus Bruce Bailey. In the design categories, in-house designer Wendy Treverton was awarded three honourable mentions in the Best Art Direction of a Single Article or Opening Spread category and the magazine also took home silver for the Best Cover, for its spring 2023 issue featuring the Black Studies program. For Art Direction of a Complete Issue, the Alumni Review team received honourable mentions for both the spring and summer 2023 issues. The Review also received an honourable mention for Best Editorial Package for its content related to the creation and growth of the Black Studies program at Queen’s. In the top category, Best Magazine, the Alumni Review took home an honourable mention, marking the third year in a row that the magazine has either been nominated for or won this category.

The were announced in June and the Alumni Review was acknowledged with a silver award for the Best Photograph, once again for Wade Hudson’s image of faculty members of the Black Studies program. Finally, the magazine was recognized with the silver award for the Best Creativity on a Shoestring for its popular Homecoming photo booth that put alumni on the cover of the magazine.
