Marcus Wong, Artsci’03
Vice-Chair, University Council Executive Committee and incoming member of the Board of Trustees
I chose to go to Queen’s University because of its reputation for academic rigour and excellence; it was a place where I hoped I would learn from some of the most distinguished minds, while also interacting with the future leaders of government, business, and research.
But what I didn’t realize when I chose Queen’s was that not only would this university be all of those things, but it would also be a place where I would finally find a deep sense of belonging. Queen’s was, and still is, a very close-knit community of peers – students, alumni, staff, and faculty – many of whom would quickly become my extended family, while Kingston would come to feel like my second home, even to this day. In fact, my tricolour family now spans across literal generations, ranging from a recent Chief FREC to a Companion of the Order of Canada.
Besides being one of the most formative experiences in my life, Queen’s firmly set my feet on a path of public leadership, board governance, and philanthropy, compelling me to rise instinctively to every occasion with the trademark excellence of my extended Queen’s family. By giving back my time, talents, and treasure, it is my hope that Queen’s University will continue to be a place where others can find a life-long sense of belonging, and where the consistent achievement of excellence will not just be a lofty aspiration, but a non-negotiable part of its identity.
