In honour of his parents, John Hazell, Arts’55, MA’56, and Mary Hazell (nee Gibbs), NSc’56, and as a tribute to the way “Queen’s has been an important and continuing thread” throughout their lives, Evan Hazell, Sc’81, made one of the largest philanthropic donations of the past decade to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. The gift created The Hazell Endowment in Chemical Design and Innovation.
The donation will fund a research professorship and support programming and outreach activities, including community service learning projects, industrial mentors and guest speakers. Professor Scott Parent, Sc’91, has been appointed the first Hazell Research Professor in Chemical Design and Innovation. Parent’s vision for the professorship is to take principles of design and innovation out of the classroom and into the laboratory: “What I’d like our students to experience more is designing with their own hands and seeing the products of their ideas.”
Both the professorship and the program fund will allow the Department of Chemical Engineering to be at the forefront of teaching and research in chemical design and innovation influencing the engineers of tomorrow, both at Queen’s and around the world.
