Four Queen's students receive Canada’s largest STEM scholarship

Meet the Queen's University 2019 Schulich Leaders

Four students have been named Queen’s University’s recipients of the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship.

Out of a pool of more than 300,000 potential candidates across Canada, 1,400 students were nominated, of which 50 received this celebrated award.

The recipients of a scholarship to Queen’s are:

  • Andrea Stachow of Ladysmith, B.C., has received a $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship and is studying engineering beginning this fall. She was inspired to go into engineering after participating in , a Canada-wide program for top high school students interested in science, technology, arts, and entrepreneurship.
  • George Trieu of Scarborough, Ont., has received a $100,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship and is studying engineering. George has impressive computer skills and is one of the very few high school students around the globe who passed the Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician exam. This certification is considered the gateway to a career in computer networks.
  • Anthony Galassi of Niagara Falls, Ont., has received an $80,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship and is studying for a Bachelor of Computing (Honours) this fall. He was a finalist in the Young Entrepreneurs: Make Your Pitch competition by the Ontario Centres of Excellence for the London Region and wants to become an entrepreneur after graduating from Queen’s.
  • Isabeau Lewis of Toronto, Ont., has received an $80,000 Schulich Leader Scholarship and is studying for a Bachelor of Science (Honours). She was a co-ordinator at a local elementary school’s social justice club for the past six years. She helped students combine school skills and activism to run humanitarian campaigns in their community.

“Seymour Schulich and the Schulich Foundation have generously supported some of the brightest students in attending Queen’s University since 2012,” says Ann Tierney, Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs. “Queen’s is pleased to welcome another impressive group of Schulich Leaders to the university. We thank the Schulich Foundation for providing opportunities to our top students in science, engineering, and technology.”

“With 50 outstanding students selected in Canada each year, it is all but guaranteed that this group represents the best and brightest Canada has to offer,” says program founder Seymour Schulich. “These students will make great contributions to society, both on a national and global scale. With their university expenses covered, they can focus their time on their studies, research projects, extracurriculars, and entrepreneurial ventures. They are the next generation of technology innovators.”

This is not the first time Mr. Schulich’s philanthropy has benefitted Queen’s. In 2016, former principal Daniel Woolf and Mr. Schulich donated books from their personal collections to create the Schulich-Woolf Rare Book Collection. Mr. Schulich donated additional funds to acquire new books and in 2017, one of the world’s oldest printed English-language books, a 1482 copy of Polychronicon, was purchased.
