Alumnus Receives Award For Excellence In High School Teaching

A Kingston high school teacher is among four recipients of the 2012 Baillie Award for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching from ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥.

Alumnus Todd Kartye, Artsci'93, Ed'94, teaches chemistry at Bayridge Secondary School and was nominated by three of his former students, who are graduating this month from ¾ÅÐãÖ±²¥ in engineering, nursing and science.

Established by Chancellor Emeritus A. Charles Baillie, the award recognizes secondary school teachers who pass on to their students a life-long desire to learn and inspire them to pursue their goals in higher education.

"Teaching is so much more than the delivery of knowledge. Igniting a passion and helping students to identify their capabilities is a great reward," says Todd. "As a mentor and teacher it is wonderful to know that I have provided a positive influence. I truly feel a sense of pride that former students have been successful and that I played an inspirational role in their academic pursuits."

Todd will receive his award at one of his nominator's convocations on June 8.
