A Life Of Service

Brit SmithPhilanthropist and business leader Brit Smith recently donated $10 million to Queen’s – $9 million for research and teaching in nursing, surgery, and orthopaedics and $1 million for improvements to athletics and recreation facilities. Gifts from Mr. Smith and his late wife Sally total more than $12 million, making them among Queen’s most generous benefactors.

A Second World War veteran who was critically wounded and later awarded the Military Cross for his battlefield bravery, Mr. Smith has led a tremendous life of service. He founded Homestead Landholdings – one of Canada’s biggest and most successful residential developers – in 1954. With a deep-held belief in paying it forward, he has spent the years since sharing his good fortune to improve lives, open doors and make a difference at Queen’s and in the world.
